This project is promoted by a consortium made up of Mitsubishi Corp. (consortium leader), Korea Gas Corporation (Kogas), Indonesia's state-owned energy company Pertamina, and Medco, one of the Indonesia's largest energy companies. It involves constructing the fourth LNG (liquefied natural gas) plant in Indonesia. JGC has been involved with this project from the feasibility study stage, starting in 2007, and was subsequently awarded the contracts for the FEED (front end engineering and design) and finally the EPCC (engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning). The project was completed in 2015.
This project will play an important role in helping to increase LNG production from Indonesia. In addition, this is the first LNG project in which Japanese companies have taken a leading role from the planning stages through to construction and operation. When the plant is complete, the majority of the LNG produced will be exported to Japan, so this is also an important project from the viewpoint of Japanese energy security. The successful completion of the plant and the economic benefits from it help to cement JGC's position as a leader in the field of LNG projects.
